Paver Driveways & Walkways in Pasadena & the San Gabriel Valley
Driveways, walkways and turf ribbon inlays, cut and laid so the pattern still lines up at the edges.
The short answer
A paver driveway holds up or fails based on what is under it. A driveway carries vehicle loads, so it needs a deeper compacted base than a walkway does, plus proper edge restraint to stop the field from spreading. Pavers that sink, rock underfoot or drift apart at the edges are almost always a base and edge restraint problem, not a paver problem.
The detailsWhat decides whether it lasts.
Driveways are not patios
The base depth for a driveway is meaningfully greater than for a walkway or patio because of the load. Using patio spec under a driveway is a common shortcut and it shows up as ruts and settling within a few years.
Edge restraint decides the edges
Without proper restraint the outer courses migrate outward and the joints open. This is the detail that separates a driveway that still looks tight at year ten from one that does not.
Turf ribbon inlays
Paver fields with turf ribbons set between them need the cuts planned before laying starts, so the ribbon width stays consistent and the pattern resolves cleanly where it meets the garage apron and the street.

QuestionsPaver Driveways & Walkways, answered.
How long does a paver driveway last?
Decades, if the base is right. Individual pavers can also be lifted and reset if something needs repair, which is a real advantage over poured concrete.
Are pavers better than concrete?
For repairability and appearance, usually yes. For lowest upfront cost, usually no. If a section ever needs to come up for a utility, pavers go back down and concrete does not.
Do I need a permit for a driveway?
A same-footprint replacement is usually straightforward, but a new curb cut or a changed apron touches the public right of way, so we clear that with your city public works counter first.

Hired Mike and his crew to redo our entire backyard and driveway. Removal of the asphalt and existing landscaping, running water lines and electrical, artificial grass, plant borders, a paver driveway, raised the patio gazebo, added a paver patio, landscaped borders, irrigation and outdoor lighting.
