Artificial Turf in Pasadena & the San Gabriel Valley

Proper base depth, compacted sub grade and real drainage, so the lawn stays flat instead of rippling in year two.

The short answer

Artificial turf installed correctly lasts fifteen to twenty years and needs no water. Installed badly it ripples, holds water and smells within two seasons. The difference is almost never the turf itself, it is the base underneath it: excavation depth, the aggregate used, how well it is compacted, and whether drainage was solved before a single roll was laid.

The detailsWhat decides whether it lasts.

What actually fails

Turf failures are base failures. If the sub grade is not excavated deep enough and compacted properly, the surface settles unevenly and you get ripples and low spots that hold water. No product warranty covers a bad base, which is why it is worth asking any installer what depth they excavate to and how they compact it before you compare prices.

Drainage comes first

Turf is permeable, but the ground under it has to actually take the water somewhere. On the clay heavy soils common across the San Gabriel Valley that usually means a drainage plan, not just a layer of gravel and hope.

Infill and pets

If you have dogs, the infill choice and the deodorising treatment matter more than the blade height you pick from a sample board. Say so at the estimate stage so the spec is right from the start.

QuestionsArtificial Turf, answered.

How long does artificial turf last?

Fifteen to twenty years is typical for a good product installed on a properly built base. The turf usually outlives the base if the base was done badly, which is the reverse of how people expect it to fail.

Does artificial turf get hot?

Yes, in full afternoon sun it gets noticeably hotter than living grass. Lighter infills and some shade help. It is worth being honest about this before you install it in a west facing yard with no cover.

Do I need a permit for artificial turf?

The turf itself is not the trigger. Grading, drainage work and any retaining wall are what a city looks at, so we check those against your local rules before we dig.
